Teaching, learning and curriculum
Northumberland schools recognise their context in the UK and the world and are imaginative in promoting opportunities to help children and young people to learn to understand others and value diversity. Teaching and learning also promotes an awareness of human rights and the skills of participation and responsible action.
When the community cohesion duty was introduced in 2008, the skills and dispositions to be taught via the curriculum were clearly defined. We have developed a training tool to promote thinking, auditing and planning around this strand of the duty. It is available to download and print here.
A curriculum which promotes community cohesion may have a combination of the following elements:
- teaching and curriculum provision that supports high standards of attainment, and builds pupils' understanding of the diversity that surrounds them locally, nationally and in a global context
- lessons across the curriculum that promote common values and help pupils to value differences and challenge prejudice and stereotyping
- a programme of curriculum based activities where pupils' understanding of identity, heritage and community is enriched through fieldwork, visits and interaction with people from different age groups and backgrounds.
Many Northumberland schools demonstrate their teaching and learning about commonalities as well as differences through their school link or partnership.
The concept of identity in the wider UK and global contexts has been developed through a range of resources and subject areas.
