Primary Resources
The Oxfam resources catalogue recently ceased trading and selling resources, but a large number of these have been made available online. Photo Opportunities, provde great scope to challenge stereotypes and misconceptions about the lives of children in developing countries.
Pupils at Morpeth First school really enjoyed making footballs from recycled plastic carrier bags like their linking partners in the Gambia. Instructions for this activity can be found on the Cowfiles web site.
Secondary Teaching and Learning
Six Northumberland Middle and high schools took part in the pilot of an exciting teaching resource based on a popular Kenyan soap opera. Makutano Junction has a range of dedicated resources, and the opportunity to watch most of the series of the programme that have been broadcast in Kenya. Some comic based resources, using stills form the programme have been used at Ponteland Middle School to support the teaching of PSHE and citizenship.
The resources are:
PP and Red's Relationship and Red's Letter, relating to the secret romance developing between the young people in spite of their parents' disapproval.(Episodes 4 to 7 of Series 1)
Internet cafe and Bobby's arrival look at the e-safety topic of online dating and teenage girls, from episode 7 of series 4, and from episode 8, looking at the consequences of meeting a stranger who has assumed a false identity online, there is Day after the date.
There is also a curriculum resource for RE teachers of KS4, looking at connections between the QCDA Programme of study and some of the themes and episodes.
